High School Elective Course Offerings

All High School courses are one semester in length.

Art 1 - This course includes many creative growth experiences while exploring various media, artists, and cultures. It is a prerequisite for all other art classes.

Art 2 - Prerequisite: Art 1. Students are enabled to further explore a variety of media, artists, and cultures in this class.

Drawing - Prerequisite: Art 1. Students will focus on drawing techniques taught through a series of related steps and techniques, finding the incredible range of possibilities open to them through study of past and present drawing styles and expression.

3-Dimensional Art - Prerequisite: Art 1. Students will three-dimensionally incorporate fundamentals of perception, creative and skillful production, knowledge of the cultural heritage, and a basis for making informed judgments.

Crafts as a Fine Art - Prerequisite: Art 1. Celebrating the art of crafts within many cultures and time periods is the focus of this class.

Painting - Prerequisite: Art 1. Students will find the incredible range of possibilities open to them through study of past and present painting styles and expression.

Graphic Design - Prerequisite: Art 1. Computer Assisted Imagery enables students to discover and explore how technology can be used to create or to assist in the production of various forms of artwork.

Studio Art - Prerequisite: 4 semesters of Art with a B average or better and/or consent of instructor. This is an independent course for talented, self-motivated students who have the self-discipline to pursue an area of development in media of their choice.

Middle School Courses

6th Grade Exploratory - (one trimester in length) In 6th grade Art, students will use critical thinking skills and increase their knowledge of how to use the elements of art and principles of design. Students are exposed to a number of famous artists and become aware of their importance in the history of art.

7th Grade Art - Students will use critical thinking skills and increase their knowledge of how to use the elements of art. They are exposed to a number of art periods and become aware of their importance in the changing art world. (one trimester in length)

8th Grade Exploratory - (one trimester in length) The visual arts involve students in interpreting his/her emotions, feelings and insights through a variety of visual materials. They will not only study different art materials but also the identification of a variety of art styles as produced by many artists.

Using problem solving techniques on a daily basis make critical thinkers a reality in the art room. The text world of the term paper assignment is now changing to include multimedia, sound bytes, animation, video, and digital pictures in projects. Students need to become more knowledgeable in their abilities to plan, organize, interpret, and create visually. These are effective learning practices available through arts based communication skills.
